Earmaps

Points to whoever can figure out what Ian means by "earmaps".

Here's the story:
He got this plane as a Christmas gift from Uncle Vincent, Auntie Janie and little Sammi. He loves this plane, especially because "fei1 ji1 chang4 ge1" ("the airplane sings"). So he was playing with it yesterday and he says to me, "Earmaps, Mommy."
"What?"
"Earmaps."
"What?"
"EARMAPS. Fei1 ji1 dai4 earmaps." ("The airplane is wearing earmaps.")
"Oh, the airplane is wearing EARMUFFS."
"Yah."
