We had another eventful weekend. Friday night was the big surprise party for Dennis' 30th birthday. It was on the upper east side, so we met Andrea and Andrew for dinner first at a Mexican restaurant. Ian enjoyed some steak, chicken, rice and tortillas (well, actually, he threw the tortillas on the floor -- a bad habit we are trying to get rid of). Then we headed over to the surprise party at 8:30. Dennis and Cindy showed up around 9:00 pm and Dennis was pretty surprised. Ian surprised me by proceeding to eat two meatballs. He was walking around the party, being a very good boy by not touching the candles or laptop or stereo equipment. And of course, he went right to his Uncle Dennis and stared lovingly at him.Saturday was just a lazy day at home. On Sunday, we went for dim sum with Francis and Zeynep in Flushing. Ian actually slept through most of it and didn't eat much (for once). He was more interested in looking around at all the commotion. However, it was his first time sitting in a booster seat. Very exciting.
Gary, Makiko, Thomas and Alexander came over for dinner. Ian was a bit overwhelmed at first by the boys and hid behind my legs, but then he warmed up and was going in and tackling the boys while they were roughhousing. He quietly ate 3 chicken nuggets, a heaping bowl of macaroni, 5 pickles (the little ones) and a couple of slices of apple while we had our dinner. I think he ate more than Alexander and he's 5!
Tonight, on the train ride home, there was a guy across the aisle eating a pastry or cookie or something. Jeff was holding Ian and reading a book with him. Ian's attention wandered over to the guy, looked right at the food in his hand and stuck out his little hand and said, "Eh?" The guy didn't notice him at all, so Ian just went back to reading with Daddy. Our little beggar. You would think we never feed him.
At dinner tonight, he threw his cup on the floor. Both Jeff and I said, "No!" very sternly. He looked at Jeff and the lower lip began to tremble and turn downwards. Then he cried so sadly, you would think that we had left him forever. The whole time he was looking at Jeff and he reached out his little hand and tried to touch Jeff's arm, crying pathetically all the while. Of course, a couple of minutes later, he was engrossed in hitting the table with his fork and completely ignored us.
