Daddy took some pictures of Ian the Saturday before Halloween. All the kids were invited to wear their Halloween costumes and the teachers dressed up as well. Ian's favorite teacher, Miss Amanda was a bumble bee ("It's not a tail, it's a stinger!"), Mr. Chris was Batman, and Miss Lauryn was a field hockey player. Ian wore his costume at Chinese school, but refused to wear it at the gym. Probably just as well. Would have interfered with his rolling and would have made him sweat even more than usual.
It took quite a few sessions for Ian to warm up to the class (five, to be exact), but now he's really into it and I think his confidence has really been boosted. He's much more daring on the playground and willing to try new things. Maybe it's just a matter of age and him growing up, but even Kai Yi Po noted Ian's new-found sense of daring when we went to the park by their house and Ian slid down the fireman pole all by himself. Ian won't try new things in front of other people and he has to feel really comfortable to come out of his shell. As parents, we don't always know if we're doing the right thing and we didn't want to force him to participate and scar him for life, but at the same time, we didn't know how long we should wait for him fully participate. We did start pushing him a little more after a few sessions, but how much is too much? So we can only feel a sense of relief when it all turns out well and we didn't cause some sort of phobia in our child!
