Ian's baby sister was born on January 11, 2008, at 12:12 pm. Lia weighed in at a full pound heavier than her big brother! Ian was so sweet when he came to the hospital that evening to visit us with Tia Cindy, Tio Dennis and Abuelita. He was carrying two balloons for Mommy and he couldn't wait to see his mei4-mei4 (little sister). He was the first one to hold her and he was very good at it, too. He kissed her a lot and then proclaimed, "So cute!" When she cried, he patted her and said, "It's OK, Lia, don't cry." He came to the hospital the next afternoon with Abuelita and Daddy as well. We walked over to the nursery to watch the nurse change Lia's diaper and Abuelita joked that we should take one of the other babies home with us and Ian looked at her very seriously and said, "No. That's not my baby. Just Lia." He also told me very seriously, "I not hit the baby because that's not nice." He is going to be a very good ge1-ge1 (big brother). The picture above was taken in the hospital with Ian sitting on the bed next to Mommy and holding Lia (Daddy judiciously cut Mommy's head out of the picture). The sticker on Ian's hand is one of his dinosaur stickers that he gets for going pee pee on the potty (he gets a puffy bear sticker for going poopy on the potty).
He's been really great over the past almost 4 weeks (time flies!). He's had a couple of meltdowns and he clearly wants Mommy and Daddy to pay more attention to him than to Lia at times, but he is also really helpful. Whenever we mention that Lia needs a diaper change, he runs to the changing table and pulls out a diaper for her. His potty training is in a bit of a holding pattern and he doesn't willingly go all the time, but that's really the worst of the behavioral issues. Oh, and the waking up in the middle of the night.
This is Ian holding Lia 10 days after she was born:
Ian and Wai Po have become buddies over the past few weeks. Wai Po makes Ian breakfast in the morning and takes him to and from school every day. He tells me that Wai Po is teaching his friends Chinese and how to say kong3 long2 (dinosaur) and qin1-qin1 (kiss). The first week Wai Po was here, she asked Ian if she could take Lia back to Taiwan with her. He replied, "No, Wai Po go back to Taiwan. Lia stay here." This week, Wai Po said she was going to go back to Taiwan soon and Ian said he wanted to go with her. We're really going to miss Wai Po when she leaves on Friday!
And if you think anything ever escapes this kid or that he forgets things, last week at dinner, out of the blue, he said, "Abuelita said that we should change the baby for another baby."
I still need to sort through all of Ian's birthday pictures and our Christmas pictures, so that's still coming. Ian's Spanish improved quite a bit in December with Abuelita staying with us full time and now Ian's Chinese has improved with Wai Po here. It's really great!
My first baby isn't a baby anymore :( He is such a big boy and can be such a pain in the neck sometimes, but he's still my baby and he still gives the best hugs and kisses!!!
