A perfect Labor Day weekend

I think this was the nicest Labor Day weekend we have had in a long time. The weather was just perfect. Every day was in the high 70's/low 80's, not too humid. No AC was necessary in the house and we had all the windows open.

We had visitors this weekend. Yu-An Yi (aka Auntie Liz) and Adam came down to visit us from Massachusetts, where they are both hard at work in med school. They drove down Friday night, parked their car at our house and went into the city to see friends and get up at the crack of dawn to go see the U.S. Open on Saturday in Flushing.

Saturday morning we had friends Andrea, Andrew, Helen, Rick and Natalie bring bagels, lox, doughnuts and coffee for an early brunch. Natalie, who is five, loves going to the park down the street, so after we ate, we walked down and Natalie went on the swings and Ian drew buses, elephants and happy faces with Andrea and me, while he guys threw a lacrosse ball around.
Helen, Rick and Natalie had to go around 1:00, but Andrea and Andrew stayed the afternoon and for dinner. Ian must have done his Cars puzzle at least 10 times and then he was drawing. He suckered Andrew into drawing with him and Andrew drew lots of things at Ian's direction. Ian said that Andrew drew buses and snails and other things I can't remember. When Ian woke up Sunday morning, the first thing he asked me was, "Where is Andrew? Is Andrew not here?" I told him that Andrew and Andrea went home and he would periodically tell me that Andrew went home over the course of the next hour. We saw the drawings Andrew had done and I asked him who drew them and he said, "Uncle Andrew. Uncle Andrew went home."

Liz and Adam arrived around 11:30 and Ian had new people to show off for. He was pretty shy at first, but warmed up quickly after they got on the floor and played with his trucks with him. And then they gave him a present.
It was pretty funny because he ripped open the front of the present, but then stopped and just peered into the package. It reminded me of what he did at Christmas. He would tear off a small piece and then hand it to one of us, then lean down to look into the hole. He stopped ripping the paper and just kept staring into the package. We were all encouraging him to keep opening it. He wandered off at one point and we had to direct him back to the present. Finally, he opened it up and it was a big dump truck with blocks in it. After Daddy got all the packaging off it, Ian went nuts with the truck. He ran around and around the kitchen island pushing it. The truck is only about 10 inches high, so it was funny to watch him.

Then around 1:00, Kai Yi Po, Kai Yi Gong and Xiao Li Yi (aka, Auntie Allie) arrived for the barbecue. They brought tons of food.
Ian was very excited about having so many people over, but then he started getting over-tired and over-heated. So he went in to watch Elmo and have some nai-nai while we finished lunch and then went up for a nap.

When he woke up, we were watching "Spiderman 3". He watched for a while, but the more action-packed scenes were very nerve-wracking for him and he would put his hands over his ears. We tried to take him away, but he said, "I wanna watch Piderman." But we finally had to take him out of the room because he just isn't ready for that kind of movie and we don't want him to have nightmares.

He got to play with Yu-An Yi (which he pronounces very well) and Uncle Adam for a while before dinner and did puzzles and played with his new dump truck.

On Monday morning, his first question when we went downstairs was "Where's my dump truck?" We had brunch with Yu-An Yi and Uncle Adam before they started back to school. Ian went down for his nap before they left and when he woke up, we took him to buy a new mattress for his big boy bed. But first we went to Lord & Taylor to drop off Mommy's coat that had gotten all wet from the leak into our coat closet. We waited in the car while Daddy went to drop it off, but it took longer than expected, so Ian and I were really sweating, even with the window open. But he was so patient and so good. We were there for probably half an hour and he never fussed. He had his elephants in his hands and when he asked for nai-nai, I only had water and he was ok with it. And then he ate a banana. Poor kid had sweat streaming down his face even though a nice breeze was blowing through.

We picked out a mattress for him and pretty quickly. Ian was very shy around the salesgirl who was trying to make friends with him, but started getting more and more comfortable the longer we stayed. He still refused to say a word, but he did peek at her and give a couple of smiles.

There was a Friendly's next door to the mattress store, so we decided to have an ice cream. Ian was very excited to have his "va-ninna ice cream". Daddy had to help him because he always holds the spoon upright and the ice cream dribbles down the spoon onto his hands and he gets all concerned. "Oh no! Oh no! I spilled it!" (he says "spilled" like this: "speeled". Hee hee!)

Then he wanted to look at the menus. He called the dessert menu "the ice cream book". There were some snacks on the back of it, so he called that side "the pasta book". I pointed out that it wasn't pasta, it was chicken fingers. He started to look at the kids' menu, which was folded in a triangle. Now, the triangle theme had been running through the whole day because the episode of Sesame Street that we watched in the morning talked about triangles and I cut his breakfast egg into triangles. So it was very exciting that the menu was shaped in a triangle. He opened it up and started pointing out the items -- "Ice cream, and dat's anudder ice cream, and dat's anudder ice cream. What's dat?" He didn't know what the colored drinks were. Then I heard him muttering, "And dat's chicken hands." We had to correct him on that one. I can just see him telling his teachers that he wants to eat chicken hands.

After ice cream, we went home and went to the park for a while. Ian drew seven buses and played on the slide and went running around with Daddy.

He is very good at climbing the plastic rock wall on the side of the big playset. It seems like just yesterday we were putting him in a park swing for the first time...
